5 Things You Can Make Instead of Buy — Easy Sustainable Swaps

SUSTAINABLE LIVINGSAVE MONEY

When it comes to living a little greener, one of the easiest places to start is at home. I have found that making things myself not only saves money but also cuts down on packaging waste and helps me avoid unnecessary chemicals. These are my go to DIY swaps. They are simple, practical, and most use stuff you probably already have on hand.

1. All-Purpose Cleaner

This one couldn’t be easier. Instead of buying cleaner after cleaner (and all those plastic spray bottles), I just make my own. I fill a spray bottle with half vinegar, half water, and throw in some citrus peels if I have them. A few drops of essential oil (like lemon or tea tree) also work great. It’s safe, it works, and it smells fresh.

2. Beeswax Food Wraps

If you’re trying to use less plastic wrap, beeswax wraps are a game changer. And they’re surprisingly easy to make. I use leftover cotton fabric scraps, sprinkle on beeswax pellets, and either iron them between parchment or bake them in the oven for a few minutes. Once cool, they’re ready to use — just like store-bought ones, but way cheaper and prettier.

3. Homemade Candles

I save old candle stubs and jars for this one. Melt the leftover wax (or use fresh wax if you’re starting from scratch), pour it into jars or tins, pop in a new wick, and add essential oils if you want. It’s a great way to reuse what you have and make your home cozy at the same time.

4. Natural Air Freshener

This is one of my favorite easy swaps. Just simmer water on the stove with orange peels, cinnamon sticks, cloves — whatever you’ve got that smells good. Or, fill little fabric sachets with dried herbs like lavender and toss them in drawers or closets. No need for store-bought sprays.

5. Bar Soap

Making your own soap is actually pretty fun. I like to use natural oils (like olive or coconut oil), lye, and essential oils for fragrance. It’s a bit of a project, but you end up with packaging-free bars that feel good on your skin and the planet.

None of these swaps require you to be super crafty or spend tons of time. They’re simple ways to cut down on waste, save money, and feel good about what’s in your home. Start small, and before you know it, you’ll be making more than you’re buying.
