How to Become a Reseller: 5 Simple Steps to Get Started

If you’ve ever thought, “I could totally flip this and make some money,” — you’re already thinking like a reseller. Whether you’re thrifting, clearing out your closet, or just want a side hustle that fits into your lifestyle, reselling is a super approachable way to start making extra income. And the best part? You don’t need a ton of experience or money to get started.

Here are 5 basic steps to help you launch your reselling journey:

1. Start With What You Have

The easiest (and cheapest) way to begin is by selling things you already own. Look through your closet, bookshelf, kitchen, or garage. That pair of jeans you never wear? That brand-name bag sitting in the back of your closet? Those can be money in your pocket. It’s a great way to practice listing and learn what sells.

2. Pick a Selling Platform

There are tons of platforms to sell on, and you don’t have to choose just one. Poshmark, eBay, Depop, Mercari, and Facebook Marketplace are all beginner-friendly. Pick one or two to start with and get familiar. I personally love Poshmark for quick sales.

3. Take Good Photos & Write Honest Descriptions

Clear, natural-light photos = sales. You don’t need a fancy setup—just your phone, good lighting, and a clean background. A simple tripod (especially one with a phone holder) can make your life way easier by keeping shots steady and hands-free. Be sure to show multiple angles and capture any flaws. In your description, be honest and specific. This builds trust and helps your items sell faster.

Look up similar items on your platform to see what they’re selling for. Price competitively, but don’t underprice your time and effort. Remember, you can always send offers or accept counteroffers later!

5. Ship Quickly & Stay Organized

Once your item sells, try to ship it out within 1–2 days. Buyers love quick shipping and it helps your rating. Keep track of what you list, what’s sold, and your profits—spreadsheets, notebooks, or reselling apps can all help. Click here for shipping supplies you'll need too get started.

Reselling is something you can do on your own time, with very little upfront investment. Whether you're looking to declutter, earn extra cash, or grow it into a legit side hustle, these steps will help you get started without feeling overwhelmed. Start small, stay consistent, and most importantly—have fun with it!
