What to Look For When Thrifting a Vintage Prom Dress

If you're thinking about wearing vintage to prom—first of all, yes. Second, let’s make sure you’re not diving into this blind.

Thrifting for a prom dress can feel like hunting for treasure. And like any good treasure hunt, there are some things to know ahead of time. Whether you’re browsing in person or scrolling on eBay at midnight (same), these tips will help you spot the good stuff—and skip the stuff that’s better left behind.

1. Start With a Decade (or a Vibe)

Going in with some idea of what you're looking for helps. Are you feeling 80s tulle and puff sleeves? 90s satin slip moment? Old Hollywood glam?

Use keywords like:

  • “80s prom dress”

  • “vintage taffeta gown”

  • “Y2K satin prom dress”

  • “Gothic lace formal dress”
This will narrow down your eBay search and help avoid sifting through endless outdated bridesmaid dresses.

2. Fabric Is Everything

Vintage dresses don’t always stretch the way modern ones do. Natural fibers like silk, cotton, or even rayon can feel and look higher-end—but they won’t give. That’s something to keep in mind when ordering online.

Pro tip: If the dress has tulle or netting, check if it’s stiff or scratchy. Old tulle can sometimes feel like sandpaper if it wasn’t cared for properly.

3. Know Your Measurements (Not Just Your Size)

Vintage sizing is all over the place. A “size 8” from the 70s might fit like a modern 2. Focus on bust, waist, and hip measurements—especially for fitted styles. When in doubt, ask the seller to measure the dress flat and compare it to something you already own.

Also, don’t shy away from tailoring. If something almost fits, a quick nip and tuck can make it perfect.

4. Look Out for These Red Flags

Not all vintage finds are worth the work. Here’s what I usually avoid:

  • Yellowed underarms: Hard to fix.

  • Dry rot: If the fabric feels brittle or disintegrates when you tug gently, walk away.

  • Strange smells: A musty closet smell can usually air out. But mildew? That’s a no.

  • Zippers that stick: Especially in older satin and lace dresses, this can mean the fabric is stressed.

5. How to Style “Too Much” Dresses

Sometimes a vintage prom dress will feel… extra. That’s not a bad thing. But if you want to balance it out:

  • Keep accessories simple (modern heels, minimal jewelry)

  • Skip heavy makeup—let the dress be the focus

  • If the skirt is huge, keep the hair sleek

  • If the top is dramatic, consider wearing your hair up to show it off

There’s always a way to style vintage in a way that feels fresh. Don’t be afraid to play around with it.
